Hong Kong: Impressions & Reflections

Hong Kong feels like a bigger city than it really is. The amount of people that crawl the city, together with all the building, gives this impression. Although I have wanted to go to Hong Kong for a very long time, I was kind of disappointed. I didn’t quite feel welcomed. (Most of) the people I encountered were so unfriendly that it almost ruined my whole experience. I did meet some friendly locals, not everyone is a grump. Also, the locals could learn a little bit about customer service, if not to help themselves out, then at least to help make foreigners and tourists alike feel a bit more at ease. I hate to admit it, but I was looking forward to continue on to Indonesia.

Putting all that negativity aside, I did like the city itself. Food is great and there is lots to see. Plus, the hostel we stayed at was great! We met many interesting and funny people. Many people at the hostel were there just to get an extension on their China visa. Some had been waiting for a few weeks, not knowing when they would get the extension, and some were only there for 2 days.

For those who are wanting to go to Hong Kong, I think 5 to 7 days is a sufficient amount of time for Hong Kong and just prepare yourself for the lack of friendliness. Just go through the city like a machine and you will be fine.
