Tirta Empul Temple

Bali is one of the only inhabited islands in Indonesia that is not populated by a Muslim majority. As a result, there are numerous Hindu temples in Bali. From what I could see, they were all beautifully crafted and houses really awesome statues of different types of Hindu gods. One of the most famous temples is Tirta Empul.

Tirta Empul is a temple close to Ubud and is dedicated to Vishnu. The temple sits on a large water spring and the water is believed to be holy, the name Tirta Empul mean Holy Spring. Many travel here to pray and bathe in the holy water for ritual purification.

I read somewhere that if you are not Hindu, you are not allowed to take a dip in the water, but I saw many tourists go in there and bathe. Maybe they were Hindu. But I didn’t ask. If you do want to bathe in the holy spring, there are lockers and changing rooms. I think you just have to pay a fee to bathe and follow others so you know how to do the ritual. Also, bring a sarong because you must cover your legs when going to any Hindu temple in Indonesia. If your legs are covered, you should wear a sash around your waist. If you don’t have your own sarong, there are always sarongs and sashes provided at the entrance of every (tourist attraction) temple.
