Balinese Dance: Legong Dance and Ramayana

One thing everyone must do when they are in Bali is catch a show of traditional Balinese dance.

We went to a “Legong” Dance and Ramayana in Ubud. You can get tickets for 70,000 IDR right at the entrance. No need to buy in advance, just go a bit earlier. There is a show almost every night, but not always the same dance. If you go, make sure to sit as close to the front as possible, because then you can have a close look at their facial expressions and at their costumes, which are really beautiful.

The dances are accompanied with traditional music and insturments, called gamelan. The show we went to had two different storues. The first, Legong Jobog dance is about two brothers who are kings, Subali and Sugriwa. The two are greedy and get turned into monkeys.

The second story, Ramayana, is about Rama, Sita, and her brother, Laksamana. They journey into a jungle and are detected by a demonic minister, Maricha. Maricha and his king, Rahwana, want to kidnapp the Pricess Sita. Although they are able to lure Sita into exile, they ultimately fail at keeping her because others have been sent to rescue her. After a battle with Jatayu (a giant bird, who is friends with Rama’s father) and Hanoman (white warrior monkey), Sita is finally released and is returned to Rama and Laksamana.
