While we were in Wana Giri, we decided to hike the crater and hired a local guide, Made. We started early in the morning.
During the hike, we ate various fruits, like maracuja (passion fruit), pomelo (the really big grapefruits), mandarins, and tamarilo. All plucked directly from the tree. All very tasty and super fresh. The rainforest was amazing, very lush and dense.
The hike was not too difficult, but it became slippery at times because it rained in the late morning. We also had a few leeches, which you can fend off by rubbing shampoo or something similar on your shoes and socks because the leeches don´t like chemical products. They wont crawl past the areas that you have smeared with shampoo. But if you get a leech in your shirt, just pull them off and you will be fine. You just will bleed until the wound heals, which will be a few hours. But it doesn´t hurt though, so no worries.
We hiked for a few hours and Made took us to a local farmer´s house, where they served us coffee and bananas and we gave them a tip for welcoming us into their home. We continued the hike until late morning and then started the way back to the town before we saw the crater because it became too foggy to continue on.
Afterwards, Made invited us to his house for dinner. We gladly accepted, but first we returned to our eco villa to rest.
Look out for the next post to learn more about the dinner and more about Made. The next post will take some time though, it is currently a challenge to find internet connections.
